#CS374 Help a widowed mother’s urgent requirement

Widowed for the last five years, this lady has been taking on the role of the sole breadwinner for her two sons (aged 17 and 9 years old) and aged mother. She has always persevered and worked hard to ensure that her sons get to achieve their dreams, despite the family circumstances.

As a tailor with a machine that was donated to her she sews ladies’ dresses and curtains at a very small rate and she has also tried her best to expand her business by printing visiting cards and approaching shops in Pettah for orders. She works hard in her house that is terribly deteriorating, trying her best to collect enough money to help her son achieve his dreams of excelling in A/Level and going on to become a chef, to cover daily expenses for the family, and to cover the health expenses for her asthmatic and arthritic older son, who dreams of building a better future for his family despite his mobility issues and chronic pain.

This is a family that is trying their best to build their future, a family that is using their resources to get ahead in life, a family that perseveres against all odds. And we have a duty to extend small kindnesses and help them through that journey.

Their most pressing need is the repair of their house roof and sides, which leak profusely during rainy seasons. The small one room space they live eat and sleep in gets entirely flooded during monsoon season. This means that parts of the house (which is already quite small) are rendered uninhabitable during the heavy monsoons. They sometimes have to stay awake standing on a furniture all through the night. Roof experts have recommended that the roof be flattened and reconstructed, to ensure the family’s safety during the rainy seasons. But amidst all their other expenses, this family is not able to bear the costs of this on their own.
