At 43 years, and having done wiring work in Rathnapura, he was subsequently unable to find work in the area to support his family of 4. Driven by his difficult circumstances, he found work as an employee in a hotel in Kandy, where he earned a monthly sum of around Rs. 20,000/- to Rs. 25,000/-.
His wife, who excelled in her tailoring skills, managed to earn a monthly sum of around Rs. 15,000/- using an old sewing machine. However, she was not able to take up certain orders since the machine was not functioning properly.
Their elder daughter, aged 11, a promising student who scored well in her scholarship exams, was unable to attend extra classes owing to the financial situation. The earnings of her parents were only sufficient to cover the expenses for one extra class.
Moreover, the financial constraints of the household could not get any better when the government stopped the samurdhi allowance.
CareStation stepped in to assess the pressing need of this family. We realised that providing a new sewing machine to this well deserved entrepreneur would help her increase her monthly earnings and thereby, also help secure a more promising future for her academically motivated daughter.
Thanks to our benevolent donors, the sewing machine provided by CareStation has enabled her to earn a healthy client base for her business, and given her the confidence to take her business to new heights: she has started to conduct sewing classes and also hopes to open a shop to sell her sewn clothes.
