Our hearts are full as we watch the fishermen set sail with their newly donated canoes. In the coastal community of Pulumodai, eight fishermen have been struggling for years to provide for their families. Despite their vast experience and long days spent at sea, they often returned home empty-handed due to a lack of proper equipment. Without the resources to improve their livelihood, they were stuck in a cycle of poverty and uncertainty.
At CareStation, we saw their potential and initiated a project under our Self-Employment and Livelihood Support cause. With the generous support of donors through our Zakat Project, we were able to provide four new canoes—each shared by two fishermen—giving them the opportunity to maximize their efforts at sea. Each canoe, costing LKR 153,000, was a life-changing tool for these men, enabling them to fish more efficiently and provide a sustainable income for their families. The total project budget for these four canoes amounted to LKR 612,000.
These new canoes have drastically improved the lives of these eight fishermen. With more efficient tools, they can now catch more fish, earn a stable income, and support their families. The benefits go beyond just their daily catch; their children can now attend school, and their families enjoy more regular meals. The dignity of self-sufficiency is something these fishermen are beginning to reclaim.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, eight fishermen in Pulumodai are now on their way to securing a better future for their families. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to this life-changing initiative.
